Beetroot - Cylindra

A long cylindrical beet that slices into neat even rounds. Cylindra grows upward out of the soil, so it takes less room in the row than a globe beet.

How to plant it

  • Plant 8cm apart. Cylindra grows down and up rather than out, so you can fit more into the same row than you could round beets.
  • Give it deeper, looser soil than you would a globe beet. The root is long and it needs somewhere to go.
  • Keep the watering steady. Uneven watering is what splits any beetroot, and a long root has more to split.
  • The shoulder will push well clear of the soil as it grows. That is normal for this one, not a sign anything is wrong.
  • Lift at eleven to thirteen weeks. One root slices into a whole jar of even rounds, which is the entire point of growing it.
