How to plant it

  • Plant 10cm apart, in rows about 30cm apart. They need less room than most people give them.
  • Beetroot wants friable soil, the sort that breaks apart in your hands. Dig it over first and pull out any stones, or the roots come out lumpy.
  • Keep it well watered. A beet that dries out and then gets a soaking will split open.
  • Pick a few young leaves along the way. They taste like silverbeet and the plant will not miss them.
  • Lift at ten to twelve weeks, once the shoulder is showing above the soil somewhere between a golf ball and a tennis ball.
