How to plant it

  • Plant 30cm apart. It fills a bigger footprint than it looks like it is going to.
  • Water steadily rather than in bursts. Uneven watering is what splits a heading lettuce.
  • Leave it alone until seven to nine weeks. It looks finished a good fortnight before it actually is.
  • Squeeze the top gently to check. If it gives easily, it needs longer.
  • Cut it at the base with a knife rather than pulling the whole plant up.
