How to plant it

  • Plant 20cm apart in full sun, with compost dug through first.
  • Despite the name, this is a silverbeet rather than a beetroot. You are growing it for the stems and leaves, not for a root.
  • Pick outer leaves from the base as you need them and leave the centre growing. One plant will keep you going for months.
  • Keep the water up. Silverbeet grown dry turns tough and stringy.
  • Each colour tastes slightly different, and all of them are milder than standard silverbeet.
  • Start picking from six weeks and keep going. Once it runs to seed the leaves turn bitter, so pick often.
